Happy International Day of Peace! Now, we know this day isnāt exactly a household name in Malaysia, and you might be scratching your head wondering what itās all about. The International Day of Peace, observed every 21st of September, was established by the United Nations as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace worldwide. While it might not be widely celebrated here, itās still worth reflecting on how lucky we are to live in a relatively peaceful country.
Malaysia: A Peaceful Day, Every Day
Malaysia is known for its diverse cultures, ethnicities, and religions. Despite these differences, we have largely managed to live together in harmony. Sure, things can get a little heated at times, whether it is over politics, sports, or the latest price hike, but on a daily basis, peace is something we enjoy without even realising it.
Youāll notice it in the way we go about our lives, whether weāre catching up over a cup of teh tarik, enjoying local street food, or just getting on with our work. We may have our differences, but overall, we have a shared respect for each otherās backgrounds, traditions, and values. Thatās something youāll find everywhere, from big cities like Kuala Lumpur to quieter towns like Raub.
What Might Disrupt the Peace?
Although Malaysia is generally peaceful, like any country, we do experience occasional moments of unrest. To be honest, political rallies, protests, and disagreements between different groups can sometimes stir things up. There are also events like natural disasters, haze from neighbouring countries, or even the dreaded festive season traffic jams, which can test anyoneās patience!
But, even during these times, Malaysians tend to pull together. Youāll find that community spirit really comes through, and most people are quick to offer a helping hand or words of encouragement.
Why the International Day of Peace Matters
Even though the International Day of Peace isnāt widely celebrated in Malaysia, it serves as a good reminder to appreciate the peace we often take for granted. Living in a peaceful country like Malaysia is a privilege, and itās important to remember that peace doesnāt just happen by itself. It is something we all contribute to by being respectful and mindful of those around us.
Whether youāre new to Malaysia or have been living here for a while, take a moment today to appreciate the calm that surrounds us most of the time. And if you ever experience one of those not-so-peaceful moments, just know that itās usually short-lived, and weāll soon be back to our usual peaceful ways.
Hereās to peace, in Malaysia and around the world!
